Gulf region has become hub for counterfeit Indian currency. Compared to the US and the UK, countries like Dubai, Oman and Kuwait are main source to transfer large amounts of cash in the form of Indian currency. Indian embassies in the Gulf region have informed NRI’s all over the world not to carry more than Rs.7500/- INR while travelling to India.
According to the statement released by Indian Missions, not only Gulf NRI’s this is applicable to NRI’s throughout the world. They are allowed to carry up to Rs 7,500/- in Indian currency per person when travelling abroad or returning to India.
Indian missions in the Gulf region said “There have been some incidents where NRI’s faced problem at airport as they carried lot of Indian currency while visiting India. Also in some cases the currency carried by NRIs has been found to be counterfeit”
