Although physical activity is beneficial for every part of your body, including your skin, your pores will still become clogged if you do not take the proper skincare steps to prevent it.

When sweat from your workout mixes with oil, dead skin cells and bacteria that can overwhelm pores and lead to clogging.

There are very simple preventative measures you can take to keep your skin as aerated and oil-free as possible while you workout. Here is what you can do before, during and after workout to stay away from post-workout acne.

Always start with a clean face. Remove any makeup or lotions from your face prior to a workout.

When women choose to wear makeup while working out this clogs pores in conjunction with sweat. Do not be mislead by the notion that oil-free cosmetics and lotions will not clog your pores.

Always wash your face with a gentle face wash prior to a workout to remove any excess buildup from the day. If you are unable to wash your face, optimize by utilizing facial wipes.

If you are prone to having oily skin, then you should also use salicylic acid-based toner or facial wipes. Salicylic acid has proven to be highly effective in breaking down the material that is deep within the pores that can lead to pimples. If you have dry skin or combination skin then you should not use salicylic acid, this will result in acne.

Once you are done cleansing your skin, you should use a gentle moisturizer that is made for your skin type. My suggestion for combination skin and dry skin is to use products such as Cetaphil. For Oily skin, I suggest desert essence face wash. For body acne, I suggest desert essence organics pure body wash.

Always shower immediately after a workout.

If you are unable to shower before or after your workout, consider utilizing facial wipes alongside using anti-acne body sprays that contain 2% salicylic acid. By using these two methods you are equipping your body with the necessary tools to combat both facial as well as body acne.

Wear cotton clothing.

Allow your body to breath easily during your vigorous workouts. The type of clothing you choose to wear greatly impacts your body’s chance to harboring acne after a workout. Always choose natural fabrics such as 100% cotton.

If you are prone to sweating profusely then optimize your wardrobe with moisture-wicking fabrics. By choosing moisture-wicking fabrics this pushes the sweat further away from the skin and into the next layers of the cloth. This is due to capillary action, which is also known as wicking.
